The England manager Criticizes Wembley Crowd Support Following Dominant Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel shared his sadness that the England team did not get stronger support from the Wembley crowd during their decisive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday night.
Tuchel was pleased to see his side maintain their good form, with goals from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes settling the match. Yet, he was unhappy with the mood at the national stadium.
“With one and a half sessions to get ready against a drilled team and we did very well,” Tuchel stated. “We could have been 5-0 up at the break. We missed the fourth and fifth goals. The stadium was silent. There was no support from the crowd. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you give in the first quarter? We didn’t let them get away. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s regrettable because the squad warranted more support today.”
“I support my words. There’s nothing more than leading three goals up in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a greater support in phases where it gets difficult.”
“After halftime, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to refocus, but that’s football and so be it.”
Selection Choices Justified by Performance
Apart from risking a fight with fans, the manager also caused a stir by omitting Jude Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. Yet the decision was backed up by Morgan Rogers excelling in the No 10 position and netting his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” the head coach said. “He is a No 10 and he is vying for his place.”
Bellamy Seeks Lessons from Loss
Craig Bellamy hopes that his team, who face Belgium in a important qualifying match on Monday, learn from their poor first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this match,” the manager commented. “I wanted to assess where we are. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? This performance fills me with drive.”
Fitness Worry for Striker
Ollie Watkins was substituted at the break after colliding with a post and is a concern when England face their next opponents in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
