Bungie's Troubled Shooter Project Marathon Shows Signs of Life
The upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, Bungie's highly-anticipated project, has resurfaced with the announcement of a closed technical test scheduled to take place soon.
A Rocky Development Journey
Initially revealed during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Marathon has undergone a tumultuous creation process. Last fall, the developer stated it was aiming to begin alpha testing during the coming year. A period of silence followed, until the game was re-revealed in spring with a planned September release. However, following initial testing led to mixed reactions, Bungie revealed during summer that it was postponing the game's launch.
Steering Clear of Controversy
Though Marathon has already encountered its fair share of controversies, Bungie appears committed to make certain their project avoids the same outcome as other games. Currently, it appears the project's progress is finally getting back on track, as Bungie just disclosed that it has run "several closed playtests to gather feedback on the game" since June of this year. The developer is expanding access, allowing additional participants to catch a glimpse of the experience via an upcoming "closed technical test."
Exclusive Testing Information
Considering it's a private testing phase, it's understandably limited access than, for example, an public test. To participate in the technical test — which takes place between October 22nd to October 28th — participants must meet the following pre-requisites:
- Submit an application via their platform
- Reside in Europe or North America
- Have access to a PS5, Xbox console, or Windows PC (system requirements include an compatible CPU, supported graphics card, and 8GB RAM)
- Participate in the official Discord server
- Sign an NDA via the Discord server
How to Apply
Applications are open now, and to be considered for the private trial, applicants must submit their application by Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. PDT. Players on Windows PC can also submit their application via the digital platform starting on Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. PDT, with Steam applications due by October 26th. Bungie will notify players who qualify and provide details of the next steps.
"This represents a crucial milestone for us as we test our improvements since the game's Alpha, including multiple locations, several character options, proximity communication, re-tuned combat pacing, individual matchmaking, deeper environmental storytelling, and more," the studio stated. "However, the Technical Test build is a development build and will only include a portion of what's intended for Marathon's final version, concentrating on the initial gameplay moments."
Additional Information
More info about the private trial and the actual experience can be found on the game's support section. But for players who don't qualify for the trial (or cannot participate), there's positive developments: The developer says a official announcement on the project's status is the next thing on the agenda once the trial concludes.
"There will be a comprehensive report on the game's progress in the near future after the Closed Technical Test!" Bungie shared.
